Cool Colors to Beat the Summer Heat

With each new season comes new opportunity to adapt your interior space to boast the most attractive colors for that particular time of year. Summer is no different. Particularly when staging a home for sale, renewing your home’s appearance through small changes will appeal to the current lifestyle emotions of your prospective buyers.

Think about it this way – if your home is adorned in beautiful harvest gold hues, with accents of burgundy and chocolate brown, it might not be communicating “summer fun” to others. While these colors may have been your favorites for years, they might not be appealing to many people’s interest – as is the goal in professional staging. But don’t fret! With a few touches, your home’s Fall colors can be easily transformed to something more neutral that will seem more like Summer season. First, put away the burgundy and red colors until autumn rolls around. We can work with the gold and chocolate brown by instead adding a few summer colors – light blue or fresh green! These colors are reminiscent of the ocean, sky and lush fields of grass.

One place to exchange colors may be in your pillows and curtains. In fact, HGTV.com featured designer, Patrick J. Baglino, Jr., ASID, (www.pbaglino.com), “welcomes the change of seasons as the perfect opportunity to bring changes into your home, whether it’s de-cluttering or simply exchanging dark accessories for light.” According to HGTV, when Baglino was a child, he would “change his bedspread and curtains with the seasons.” Now that’s commitment to fresh interiors, year round! This tip would be more challenging to achieve with custom treatments like cathedral length curtains, but if your curtains are standard height from popular retail stores, the value would be worth the cost of temporarily replacing heavy fabrics with lightweight sheers for the summer.

The appropriately titled HGTV article, “Sizzling Summer Decorating,” relays this season’s top trends, only serving to reinforce the work that MHM Professional Staging has been recently suggesting to our clients. The best interior colors are fresh and bright, to match the mood of this time for outdoor play. Well, why not bring the outdoors… IN?! Baglino reports that “many manufacturers are creating beautiful fabrics made by Sunbrella that can be used to upholster furniture for either inside or out.” He states that he “had a client with small children who wanted to have attractive fabrics for their family room and chose outdoor fabrics because of their stain resistance.” If you’re living in the home that you’re positioning for sale, this is a great idea. Durability is critical to provide a consistently clean home presentation.

Another easy and affordable approach to shifting your interior colors is to apply fresh blue or green paint on an accent wall. If your home has a red accent wall, for example, maybe consider repainting that one red wall with bird’s egg blue for the summer and accessorize accordingly. Remember – it’s important for your new summer color to coordinate appropriately with the colors throughout your house. If your other walls boast a fresh white, then your colors will coordinate easily. However, if you have beige wall colors, you will need to adapt your accent color to the tone of beige. For warmly tinted beiges, choose a warmer shade of blue or green. For cooler beige, a cooler tone of your blue or green is better. Bring paint swatches home from the store to be sure you’re choosing the right paint before embarking on your interior touch ups. Even your flooring colors can make a difference in selecting the right accent paint!

Think strategically with your summer color refresh project, as you position your home to appeal to a broad audience of potential buyers. Your goal is to produce a seamless flow from room to room, while still remaining fresh and new. At MHM Professional Staging, we have our clients’ best interest in mind. Our expertise has helped drive sales success in all seasons – Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring!
